Job description

We are looking for a highly organised and enthusiastic person to support the work of the Environment Management teams in the Thames area.

Our work is varied and interesting and no two days are quite the same. You will provide administrative support enabling the teams to meet their business targets and ultimately helping to secure positive outcomes for people, wildlife, and the environment.

The Environment Assistant will support the team by:

  • Receiving and responding to enquiries, acting as a point of contact for the team, to ensure that all requests and incidents are responded to in an appropriate and timely manner and monitor so that all statutory deadlines are met.
  • Administering the team inboxes, ensuring adherence to records management requirements and the retention schedule.
  • Updating and maintaining the team's filing system (paper and electronic) to ensure that information is accurate, up-to-date, and available for use.
  • Assisting team members with the compilation of case files, checking that all the necessary information is included and complies with legislation, so that non-compliances can be successfully prosecuted.
  • Assisting team members and the department with debt recovery work, collating information using internal systems, so we recover the costs of our regulatory and incident response work.
  • Support and process procurement requests for the team to ensure that appropriate equipment and supplies are available to enable them to perform their roles.
  • Providing admin support to Team Leaders and Senior Environment Officers within your team and the wider department as requested.

This support role is predominantly office based but there may be some opportunity to shadow or assist other members of staff whilst working out on site.

The team

You will be part of the lively and dynamic Environment Management department. We respond to environmental incidents across Thames. The teams regulate permitted sites ranging from local household waste recycling centres and scrapyards to pig and poultry farms and water companies. We investigate illegal activity and take enforcement action as necessary. We work with our professional partners and customers to influence behaviour and encourage good practice to protect and enhance the environment.

Experience/skills required

Ideally you will have proven administrative experience.

We are seeking people who have;

  • excellent written and verbal communication skills,
  • self-motivation and the ability to prioritise workload and adapt to changeable deadlines,
  • the ability to manage a diary and perform administrative tasks,
  • an ability to make timely and rational decisions based on relevant information and experience,
  • proficiency and perhaps skills to be innovative in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and a willingness to learn about our internal IT systems and procedures,
  • a desire to help improve and protect the environment, a knowledge of environmental issues will help you but are not essential

In addition to the above, the ideal candidates must have a positive attitude, be confident in engaging with staff and members of the public (over the phone and in person) and be comfortable working both on their own and within a team.

Contact and additional information

We are an inclusive organisation committed to diversity and work hard to build a safe and supportive workplace; you will be an active part of that.

There are fully funded opportunities to develop academic/professional qualifications and there is an opportunity to be included on the Apprentice Scheme. You will be supported to take up an appropriate incident management role
