Job description

Are you passionate about the environment? Join us and help create a cleaner, safer and healthier environment for people and wildlife.

We are looking for professional, enthusiastic people to join our team of Regulatory Officers. Working across the North of England, you will play a critical frontline role. You will regulate a range of businesses who operate in the Producer Responsibility regime. You will also help to regulate International Waste Shipments. Your job will be to ensure that producers, treatment sites and exporters of waste comply with their responsibilities. You must have an eye for detail and will take appropriate enforcement action where necessary to protect the environment and drive towards a circular economy.

The role is varied and challenging. You must be able to work as part of a dispersed team requiring you do be well-organised, self-motivated and disciplined.

Whatever your background, you’ll be interested in the environment, making a difference and using environmental regulation to achieve improvements that are significant but not always visible to the general public.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

It is your answers given to the questions below that will be used for interview selection. More information on how to answer these questions can be found by downloading our Environment Agency Capability Dictionary. It is strongly recommended that you read this before answering. We do not accept CV’s.

The team

The Environment Agency operates across England. You will be based in one of our Pan Area Teams in the North and you will need to travel. The team consists of Regulatory Officers and Senior Technical Officers who specialise in monitoring compliance at regulated and some non-regulated facilities. They also undertake enforcement action where offences have occurred. Enforcement includes prosecutions and Enforcement Undertakings. The team is friendly, supportive and dedicated.

Experience/skills required

We are looking for people with various types of experience who can demonstrate the capabilities and interpersonal skills needed for the role. Waste industry or regulatory experience is not necessary as you will receive full training. We are looking for people who enjoy working both outdoors and in an office environment. Demonstrating the right behaviours is very important to us. You should be able to show us that you are:

In addition to having an office base, you may work from home occasionally. Some travelling for training, meetings and site visits is expected. A full clean driving licence is essential.

The role offers an attractive salary and benefits such as:

  • 25 days annual leave
