Leonardo in Southampton is a world-leading manufacturer of Infrared detectors covering a broad range of wavelengths. These devices have widespread uses in industrial and civil applications as well as fulfilling many military requirements. Leonardo also work closely with the scientific community to develop technologies in the Astronomy and Space sector.
The purpose of the role is to provide a high standard of support to production for the testing of products at all levels within the product build. The candidate will become a subject matter expert on the products, and the tools and equipment used to test them. Working with the production staff and engineering community the candidate will lead system; module and circuit level troubleshooting activities, down to component level, keep excellent records of failures and ensure corrective and preventative action is taken to prevent recurrence.

What You Will Do
- Provision of technical support to the test of infrared detectors at various stages through the product build process to ensure that production targets are met to agreed cost, quality and delivery
- Identify and deliver strategic improvement projects to improve test equipment reliability and reduce cycle times
- Support the build and validation of test systems and equipment and their successful transfer to production
- Plan and carry out training plans for test and manufacturing operatives

What we are looking for
Essential
Degree in Electronics or Physics with a good background in Electronics, or equivalent experience
- Ability to identify and address issues at root cause level and use the wider engineering community as required
Ability to characterise/test product on an ad hoc basis outside of the normal production boundaries
Ability to write test instructions and other technical documentation
Experience in a production support role within the same or comparable discipline
Experience in one or more of the following areas: electrical test, semiconductor physics, electro-optics, cryogenics
Evidence of good organisation, planning and execution of work and self-sufficiency
Ability to work closely in a team with other engineering disciplines and shop floor staff
Ability to conduct soldering including the following; surface mount, through-hole, cable harnesses and wiring
Effective communicator
Attention to detail
Demonstrate flexible approach

Knowledge of PCs and software installation
Experience of supporting test in a volume production environment
Awareness and/or experience of lean six sigma principles
Ability to interpret software code in order to identify bugs
Ability to solder 0402 components/fine pitch devices
Experience of working in or with environmental testing
Ability to conduct soldering at a IPC Standard
Knowledge of ergonomics
