About the role



We are currently recruiting a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to join our Engineering team in QinetiQ Target Systems (QTS). QTS is a wholly owned subsidiary of QinetiQ Group PLC specialising in the design and manufacture of a range of state of the art Unmanned Aerial and Surface Target systems including the world leading Banshee target.



QTS targets are used to enable realistic weapons test and evaluation and operator training in over 40 countries worldwide with QTS providing a complete managed service in over 15 of these countries.



What will I be doing?



Reporting to the Software Engineering Manager, you will be designing and assisting in guiding the development of the embedded software systems on the various projects relating to unmanned air vehicles, ariel targets, surface / marine targets and related technologies.



Duties will include:

Embedded software system design from requirements to production release



Detailed embedded real time software design to support both new and legacy products both air and ground based systems



Production and maintenance of design records in accordance with internal design procedures & ISO 9001



Project management



Field services and trials support (domestic and overseas)



Fault diagnosis of the embedded systems, both software and hardware



Provide technical support for internal and external customers for the embedded systems portfolio



Provide input to the companies continuous improvement program



Contribute to the technical direction of product design



Mentoring and assisting in the training of more junior software engineers



Acting as technical lead for small projects requiring multiple software engineers



Some travel to Europe may be required



What do I need?



You will have a degree, or equivalent, in a relevant field, experience in the design of electronics products and at least 8 years’ experience in a relevant embedded engineering design environment.



We also ask that you are competent in technical writing, are interested and willing to handle a diverse portfolio of projects and assignments and have a genuine interest to work with product realisation.

We also ask that you:

Have excellent communication skills



Are creative and pragmatic



Have strong time management skills



are an expert with demonstrable experience in the following areas;



Real time systems for both bare metal and RTOS



C programming for embedded systems



Version control systems such as git



Coding standards & good design practices, experience of MISRA desired



Software testing, verification & validation as well as white & black box



Low level drivers to interface to hardware such as UART, CAN, A/D etc.



To review & critique embedded hardware designs from a software use perspective



To read & understand datasheets of components such as processors and interface chips, UART, I2C, CAN, A/D etc.



Project management, understanding the life cycle of a project



Have or be able to quickly attain good levels of product knowledge



Are self-driven and able to deliver



Have structured and documented work methods



Knowledge in the following areas is desired:

C++ programming for embedded systems



Programming for test applications in C# within visual studio..



MATLAB – Simulink, State flow & Coder



The use of electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes and logic analyser



Practical PCB and harness assembly skills that can be used in development activities



Bill of Material creation and maintenance



Aviation and or maritime systems
